New Driver Failing to Display the Required R Plate in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland introduced new Graduated Driver Licensing rules on 1 October 2026, including a two-year new-driver R-plate requirement.

NEW GDL OFFENCE

Three penalty points

DfI states that failure to display the specified distinguishing mark during the two-year new-driver period can lead to three penalty points.

FINE

Potential £1,000 fine

The new offence carries a potential fine of up to £1,000.

FROM OCTOBER 2026

Part of Northern Ireland GDL

The new Graduated Driver Licensing system took effect from 1 October 2026.
