Speeding Penalty Points & Fines in Northern Ireland

A speeding offence in Northern Ireland can be dealt with through a speed-awareness route where eligible, a fixed penalty, or court proceedings depending on the circumstances.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES

Not every speeding case follows the same route.

Speed-awareness route

Eligible drivers may be offered an educational course rather than having the matter dealt with through the standard fixed-penalty route.

Fixed penalty

The current official NI penalty table lists three penalty points for speeding dealt with by fixed penalty.

Court

A court can impose three to six points for speeding and has discretion to disqualify depending on the case.

Existing points matter

PSNI says drivers with more than nine existing points will generally have a detected speeding case sent directly to court unless an eligible course route applies.

SAFETY CAMERAS

The registered keeper normally receives the first notice.

For offences detected by the Safety Camera Scheme, PSNI says the Fixed Penalty Processing Centre sends a Notice of Intended Prosecution to the registered owner.

The owner must provide the required information identifying who was driving at the time.
