Driving Without Insurance in Northern Ireland

Driving a vehicle on a public road without the required motor insurance is a serious motoring offence and can result in penalty points, a substantial fine and possible disqualification.

THE PENALTY

No-insurance offences carry six to eight points.

The current Northern Ireland penalty table lists six to eight penalty points for driving without insurance.

If the case is dealt with in court, the table lists a maximum fine of £5,000 and states that disqualification is discretionary.

NEW DRIVERS

Six points can be especially serious for a new driver.

The minimum point range for this offence reaches the six-point threshold used by the New Drivers Order.

A driver within the two-year new-driver probationary period should therefore understand that an insurance offence can also have consequences for their driving licence under the separate new-driver rules.

ENDORSEMENT

The endorsement remains on the driver record.

Official NI penalty-point guidance lists no insurance under the insurance offence codes and states that the endorsement remains on the driving record for four years from the date of the offence.
