New Driver Carrying an Unauthorised Passenger in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland now has passenger restrictions for certain newly qualified drivers during their first six months after passing.

PASSENGER RESTRICTION

Three penalty points

DfI states that driving with an unauthorised passenger during the restricted period can lead to three penalty points.

FINE

Potential £1,000 fine

The offence can also carry a potential fine of up to £1,000.

FIRST SIX MONTHS

When the passenger restriction applies

The restriction applies to qualifying newly qualified drivers during the first six months post-test, with exemptions described in the official GDL rules.
