Practical test manoeuvres

The manoeuvres you can be asked to do in the NI car test.

The Northern Ireland practical car test currently includes one reversing exercise and an emergency-stop exercise.

Key information

Current Northern Ireland guidance, summarised clearly.

Reversing around a corner may be selected.
Turning in the road may be selected.
Reverse parking may be on-road or into a parking bay.

What the examiner is assessing

Observation, control, accuracy and safety matter more than rushing. Keep checking around the vehicle throughout the manoeuvre.

Emergency stop

You will also be asked to carry out an emergency-stop exercise. Practise the correct procedure with an approved instructor so the response is controlled rather than panicked.
