Passed your NI driving test? Check which new-driver rules apply next.

The post-test rules are changing during 2026–27, so the date and scheme you pass under matter. Do not rely on an older article that simply says every NI driver has the same one-year R-plate rule.

Where appropriate, a licence can be issued automatically after a digital test if the required details are available.
The existing restricted-driver scheme and the new GDL R-plate scheme differ.
Under GDL, the new-driver R-plate period is two years and the first six months carry extra protections for relevant young drivers.

The GDL transition means dates matter. Use the current official guidance and PureCar GDL checker before buying plates or assuming an old speed rule applies.

Once licence restrictions are clear, compare insurance quotes before choosing a car. Engine size, value, postcode, driver profile and specific model can all materially change premiums.
