Use of Speed on the Northern Ireland driving test

A legal speed can still be inappropriate. Your speed should match visibility, road conditions, hazards and the space available.

What the examiner is assessing

You should make safe progress without exceeding limits and be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.

The category does not determine the grade by itself.A mistake can be recorded differently depending on the circumstances, repetition and level of risk. One serious or dangerous fault fails the test, while 16 or more driving faults also results in a fail.

Driving at the limit into a bend where the visible stopping distance is too short.

Missing a lower limit or failing to reduce speed for poor conditions.

How to improve before the next test

  1. Practise choosing speed from what you can see rather than from the limit alone.
  2. Review each harsh brake application and decide whether an earlier speed reduction would have removed it.
