If someone charges you for driving tuition in Northern Ireland, they must be properly registered with DVA. GDL makes structured professional instruction even more useful, and learner motorway training specifically requires an ADI.
Use DVA’s official approved instructor search rather than relying only on social media adverts.
Ask to see the instructor’s licence. ADI or PDI identification may also be displayed in the windscreen.
Ask how they will use the GDL Programme of Training and Logbook from October 2026.
Choose someone whose teaching method is clear and structured, not someone promising a guaranteed pass or a memorised “test route”.
Learners can still combine professional lessons with supervised private practice. However, only an Approved Driving Instructor can accompany a Category B learner on a motorway. The official GDL Logbook is also designed to record structured progress through the Programme of Training.
