Parking at Night in Northern Ireland
Night-time parking has additional rules covering the direction the vehicle faces and when parking lights must remain illuminated.
Do not park against the direction of traffic flow at night.
The Highway Code states that you must not park on a road at night facing against the direction of traffic flow unless the vehicle is in a recognised parking space.
Parking lights are required on roads with a speed limit above 30 mph.
All vehicles must display parking lights when parked on a road or lay-by where the speed limit is greater than 30 mph.
Some vehicles can park without lights if specific conditions are satisfied.
Eligible cars and certain other vehicles can be parked without lights on roads of 30 mph or less where they are at least 15 metres from a junction, close to the kerb and facing with the traffic, or are in a recognised parking place or lay-by.
Trailers and projecting loads have stricter lighting requirements.
The Highway Code states that other vehicles and trailers, and vehicles with projecting loads, must not be left on the road at night without lights.
