Renew Your Driving Licence at 70+ in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland driving licences issued from age 70 are normally valid for up to three years, so you need to renew if you want to continue driving.

When to renew

Check the expiry date at section 4b.

You must apply to renew when your licence is due to expire. DVA says it normally sends a renewal notice around two months before the current licence expires.

Cost

There is normally no renewal fee at 70+.

Official guidance says there is no fee where the application is made no more than two months before expiry, or when applying to renew an expired licence.

Extra entitlements

Check C1, C1E, D1 and D1E carefully.

Drivers who obtained older additional medium-goods or minibus entitlements may face extra medical requirements if they want to retain those entitlements when renewing at 70 or over.

A DLM1 medical report can be required where those higher entitlements are being retained.
